On November 16, 2013, an ash plume rose from Langila Volcano, then mixed quickly with clouds surrounding the summit. Located on Papua New Guinea’s New Britain Island, Langila erupted frequently during the 20th century—a trend that continued into the 21st.
This photograph was captured by ISERV, the ISS SERVIR Environmental Research and Visualization System. ISERV uses a digital camera installed in the International Space Station to collect imagery to assist developing nations with disaster monitoring and assessment.
