Biomass burning appeared to be increasing across Southeast Asia as February turned over to March. This image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite shows widespread burning across the region on March 2, 2004, with active fire detections marked in red. The fires burning in recent days are smokier than those detected earlier in February, with smoke pooling in the valleys in the mountainous terrain of northern Thailand and northwest Laos. In the morning overpass, taken by the Terra satellite, fewer fires are visible, though a haze of smoke from previous fires lingers over the land. Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and China are visible in this image.
