Fires and burn scars in northern Western Australia

White plumes of smoke stream from clusters of fires (red dots) in Northwest Australia in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image recorded by the Terra satellite on November 8, 2003. In some cases the fire markers surround dark brown burn scars, showing where the fires have already burned.

Off-shore, sediment makes green swirls in the coastal waters. The sediment is carried to the ocean in the region’s rivers. On the lower left side of the image, the Fitzroy River spills mud into King Sound. As the dirt disperses, it turns from a muddy brown to a cloudy green. The bright green circles in the upper left corner of the image are the Seringapatam Reef (top) and Scott Reef (bottom).
